Celebrating Southeast Asian Agriculture and Fisheries

A fisherman in a banca raises a hefty, early morning catch of fish from the Pulilan River—this image was recently adjudged the best that captured celebration in agriculture and fisheries in the recently concluded 10^th photo contest of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA). More than a thousand entries by 284 photo enthusiasts, including 101 professional photographers, from across 10 Southeast Asian countries were submitted for the annual photo contest. Of the 1,263 entries, about 300 photos qualified, from where 50 photos were shortlisted for the top 15 judging and the people's choice online voting. A judging round by development professionals and SEARCA scholars from various member countries selected the top 15 photos. The final judging by professional photographers and experts from various fields selected the final three winning photos.

On its 10^th year, SEARCA's photo contest aimed to capture the joy and passion that Southeast Asian farmers and fishers, processors, traders, and consumers share as they harvest, process, sell, and partake of the fruits of the land and sea. Photo entries depicted the vibrant countryside along with the Southeast Asians who plant, fish, and harvest food and products. The theme of the photo contest also reflects SEARCA's celebration of its 50^th founding anniversary in 2016 as an international organization that has influenced agricultural development in the region, by promoting cooperation in education, science, and culture in Southeast Asia.
